Catching up on my life

Alright blog world. So you are probably wondering what in the world happened to Kirsten.  I apologize for not posting sooner, but life has gotten really busy.  So while I have a little time this afternoon I figured I’d fill you in on what has been happening the past few weeks. Since my last post a lot has happened.

1.      At the beginning of August, Alexis Boerneke (Plath) came to visit for almost a week. It was so nice to have her here and show her where I live.  We went to the beach, hiked up to the fort at Pigeon Island, and I even drove down to Tet Paul Nature Trail. While she was here the Olympics were on, so we spent a good amount of time watching and cheering on team USA in swimming and gymnastics.

2.     I drove for the first time in St. Lucia.  While I was home this summer I got my International Drivers Permit which is what I needed to be able to drive in St. Lucia.  People in St. Lucia drive on the opposite side of the road and the steering wheel is on the opposite side of the car.  Driving here took lots of concentration and I may have accidently put on the windshield wipers when I wanted the turn signal a few times.  It was a bit nerve-wracking, but we all survived!

3.      I taught a week of summer school.  While it was not my favorite thing to do, I was able to meet a few of my new students.  Having to teach summer school at the end of summer started getting me in the school mindset.

4.      I have a boyfriend.  I officially can call Casey my boyfriend!  This may be partly why I haven’t been blogging.  I met Casey at church last year and we became friends. I taught him piano lessons and he taught my guitar lessons (which led me to buying a guitar this summer and bringing it down).  As the year went on we started spending more time together and our friendship grew from there.  What can I say?  He exceeded my expectations and I couldn’t be happier right now.  :)

5.      After a week of summer school, I had 2 weeks of classroom prep and workshops to attend.  I am so thankful that I have a year under my belt now and know what to expect as this year gets started.  This year Najma and I are in charge of Reception 1 and Robin and Tiffany are in charge of Reception 2.  Thank goodness for Najma! She keeps me sane and we both make a good team.  This year Reception 1 has 21 students and Reception 2 has 20.  This is a huge jump from our total of 29 students last year and has definitely provided some challenges along the way, but we are surviving.

6.      The weekend before school started Najma and I went to the spa and had an hour long full body massage.  Best thing ever!  I think that we are going to make it a monthly thing from now on.

7.      I learned how to kill a slug.  Who knew that all you had to do was pour salt on it for it to shrivel up and die? I watched it die in the matter of seconds and was awestruck!

8.      We officially found a huge centipede in our house.  I am so thankful I was not home for it.  Tanya had gone to make a smoothie and saw something underneath her magic bullet.  She then used a half a bottle of baygon (poison) to spray the thing.  It is very difficult to kill a centipede so the girls put a clear container over it before leaving the house.  When Casey came over that night it still wasn’t dead, so he brought it outside and crushed it.  For those of you who do not know, centipedes here can bite and it can be very painful.  Needless to say, we had our landlord get someone to come spray poison at our house, so for now the centipedes and cockroaches should be kept to a minimum.

9.      Two weeks ago, we celebrated Casey’s birthday with a day at the beach.  Kerne rented a car and we brought it to Pigeon where we grilled out and cooled off in the water.  It was a nice relaxing day with good weather.

10.  Today we had a 1p.m. dismissal, which was much needed after a long week of school.  I am looking forward to a relaxing weekend!

Back in St. Lucia

Hey everyone!  I apologize for not keeping up on my blog.  This past month has flown and I don't know where time has gone.  So here is a bit of information about my first few days back in St. Lucia which I wrote a few weeks ago on Word.  I will be posting again shortly to give more information about what has been happening the last few weeks.

Well we made it last Thursday and I have been busy since.  So here is a slight recap of the last week.
Wednesday night was my last night at home.  I had my last burger for dinner and of course made one more Target run with mom before heading home to finish packing.  I finished packing way quicker than expected, so I played banana grams with mom (little did I know that this was to waste some time).  Kelsey surprised me and came home a day early from her internship thing in Kentucky!  I think I was in a bit of shock.  I’m so happy I was able to see her one more time before I left!
Thursday morning started nice and early with my alarm going off around 3.  We left the house at 3:15 and Kelsey, Mom and Dad brought me to the airport.  It was not quite as emotional as the first time I left.  I have always hated change and I loved my time at home, but I was excited as well to get back to my life in St. Lucia.  My flights went smoothly in general.  On my first flight I sat next to a guy who was the referee in the first ever soccer game at the new Viking stadium.  In between flights I quickly went to the bathroom and got food, but almost missed my flight in the process.  My heart was beating so fast when I got to my gate and no one was there.  I also realized at this point in time how difficult it is to carry a guitar around the airport with you, although in general traveling with a guitar is pretty easy.  On my second flight I sat next to a very nice elderly couple.  The lady even offered to share her blanket with me if I was cold.
Upon arrival in St. Lucia, Abby and I went through the resident line and got through customs pretty quickly.  Pastor Tom picked us up and brought us home.  We only have one set of keys so Casey was here to let us in when we arrived home.  Before we got home he kindly did a bug check and opened some windows for us to air out the place and cool it down.  Even so, it still felt like an oven when we got home.  While Abby and I were looking forward to a nice and relaxing night, unpacking and such, we ended up going to Sheena’s Bachelorette party at Jen’s house which we found out about on our way home from the airport.  Both of us were exhausted, but we went and even came up with a few games to play.  Such a change from last year when we didn’t know anybody.  This year we saw a good chunk of people just day 1.  While I may have been tired and so happy to crash after the party, I was happy we went.  Seeing people we knew right away, made that transition into life back home a little easier.  While I was there I tried on the bridesmaids dress I was supposed to wear.  It didn’t quite fit, so that got sent back with Sheena so her mom could come up with a solution.
Friday morning I was able to sleep in a bit.  Abby and I headed to the supermarket and the guys came over and made us lunch (which was delicious by the way).  Jen picked us up around 2 and we headed to church where we helped with decorations for Sheena and Ravi’s wedding, while we waited for the Rehearsal to start.  Typical Lucian timing, the wedding rehearsal did not start on time.  The rehearsal went fairly quick though.  Afterwards we came home for a little while and then headed to Gros Islet with Casey and Kerne to visit Yuri at his bar.  I think we shocked Yuri a bit as he didn’t expect us to be home yet.
Saturday was wedding day!  I got up around 8 which is when Sheena was planning on coming with my dress.  Before she arrived I received a text and a picture from her of the dress.  Some bleach was spilled on it.  I told her not to worry and I’d figure something out.  When she got there and I tried on the dress it still didn’t quite fit, but it was better.  I spent my morning coloring in the dress with purple sharpie.  Jen picked us up and we went early to make sure music and everything was ready to go.  Unlike most weddings in the States, the bridesmaids did not get ready with the bride. Because the dress was long, I changed into my dress at church.  It was such a hot day!  The wedding started about 20 minutes late with Sheena arriving at 3. In general the wedding was pretty similar to those in the States.  Pastor Bram walked me down the aisle and the service was a basic Christian wedding.  After the wedding, I saw one of my students who happened to be at the wedding.  I was also able to talk to the Landwehrs as they were on Skype watching the wedding.  Before leaving church Tina, one of the bridesmaids, put henna on me.  She was going to do so before the wedding, but ended up having to go help Sheena with her makeup.  We then took the church bus over to Ravi’s house where the reception was.  Most of the food I believe was Guyanese and it was pretty good.  The place was packed with people outside so we found a nice spot with a few people from church.  The music was Indian, so I didn’t really dance, but it was cool to watch the few people who did.  We headed home around 10.

Sunday morning came quick and we went to church as usual.  Later in the afternoon Alexis arrived.  Alexis is a friend of gradeschool.   When she arrived, she had some Lucian leftovers and then we walked to Spinnakers for a drink and fries before heading home to watch some Olympics before bed. Travel days are always long so whenever we have visitors we make sure that our days are kept nice and short.

Martinique

Saturday:  This morning we got up nice and early to head to Martinique.  Let me tell you, it is not easy waking up for anything at 4:30 in the morning.  Jen picked us up at 5:15 and we headed to the port to meet the ferry.  Getting our boarding passes and through security was a piece of cake.  Definitely don’t need to get there an hour and a half before it leaves.  We waited for a bit and boarded our ferry.  We took the first seats we saw which was not the best idea.  Our ferry actually left 20 minutes early. I never thought I’d see the da that happens in St. Lucia.  Anyways, the whole way over we felt sick.  I’m surprised none of us got sick on the boat.  We were very excited when we finally reached shore.
Once we arrived we walked to our hotel which was pretty easy to find.  Tanya did ask for directions and I’ve realized I’m going to become very reliant on her the next few days.  We asked them to hold our luggage for us and then we hit the streets of Fort de France.  One of the first places we visited was McDonalds.  There is no McDonalds in St. Lucia so yes at 9:37 in the morning, I got fries and a hot fudge sundae.  No regrets! Afterwards we went shopping.  While prices are not cheap, the quality seems a whole lot better than St. Lucia.  I’m loving all the street art and cobblestone roads.  We went in some cute clothing shops and I bought a beach dress for 16 Euro.  While we hadn’t had a ton of food and were all hungry, we decided we needed to make the most of the day since all stores except for the mall close at 1:30.  This was a bit of a bummer, but oh well! We’ll do more shopping on Monday.  At 1:30 we stopped and got food in the mall.  We then went to the supermarket where we got cheap meat, some brie, and bread.  This will be Abby and my lunch tomorrow since we’ve been told places are closed on Sundays.  We also bought wine for cheap and some snack foods for later on and tomorrow.
We headed to the hotel to check in.  Unfortunately the made us pa for a 2nd room since our room could only fit 2 adults.  We were a bit bummed about this, but it all turned out ok after they moved us a second time to 2 adjoining rooms.  The view is spectacular and the hotel is super nice!  The front desk helped us set up a day trip for Monday, so hopefully we’ll get to see some of the island.  We stayed to rest in the room until about 7 when we headed down the road to a restaurant called the Black Pearl.  My chicken burger was delicious!  When we were finished we headed upstairs to finish our last glass of wine, before we went back to the hotel to crash. All day I have been very reliant on Tanya and it’s frustrating for me to not be able to understand or ask questions.  Another observation I have made is that people stare at us.  I’ve never been stared at so much in my life.  Men, women, children, it doesn’t seem to matter.  It’s like they’ve never seen 3 white girls who speak English together before.

Sunday:  Oh it felt so good to sleep in this morning!  I have missed sleeping with a heavier blanket on me.  The A/C made it cool and comfortable.  Way cooler than my room in St. Lucia!  We all got up and enjoyed some amazing coffee in our room.  Lavazza coffee is soooo good!  Afterwards we headed out to see if any coffee or pastry shops were open.  None were.  We had also been told the supermarket might be open, but the main one was also closed.  By this time we were all hungry and so we went to a small supermarket to get snacks.  There wasn’t much we really wanted, so we headed back to the hotel in hopes that the might still be serving breakfast.  We were too late.  We ate a few of our snacks in the room and waited until the time a ferry would leave for the beach.  All of us are crabby, but we’re hoping that the beach will have food.
The ferry was relatively easy to take.  Our first stop was at apparently the better beach, however we took a look at it and realized it was a tourist beach much like Reduit.  We chanced it and took the ferry to the next beach.  Since when did we become beach snobs?  Well our decision was worth it. This next beach had food options, coffee, and a lot more space to lay out.  After getting some coffee we laid out under a palm tree.  There was a creepy guy who kept talking to us and whom we ignored for quite some time.  He knew no English so he talked mostly to Tanya.  When we got sick of hearing from him we headed to get food.  I got pork, fries, and vegetables and it was delicious.  We finished up in time to catch the last ferry back to Fort de France.  When we got back we cancelled our trip on Monday because we found out that Monday is also a holiday for those in Martinique and therefore we won’t be able to catch a ferry in time to get us to where we would need to be for the trip.  However the kind hotel lady scheduled a lady to pick us up and give us a private tour around the island.  It won’t be by boat, but definitely will be cheaper.  Hopefully she’s open to bringing us where we want to go.  After hanging in the hotel for awhile, we went back out to find food.  The Black Pearl looked to be the only place open, so we headed back there.  This time around I got a burger.  Again very good!  I haven’t had a good burger in forever! We got back to the hotel and sat around chatting for awhile.

Monday:  Monday morning we got up, drank coffee, and had brie and bread for breakfast.  We checked out of our hotel, leaving our luggage behind and left on our tour.  The lady who took us was willing to do what we wanted and took us first to the supermarket where we were able to buy chocolate, coffee, and alcohol to bring back home with us.  This made us all very happy.  After, we went to a garden that had a souvenir shop and I was able to get more souvenirs than I probably needed, but hey I’m only in Martinique once.  We then drove through the rain to a waterfall.  The waterfall wasn’t anything spectacular compared to ones I’ve seen in the states.  Afterwards we went to the town of St. Pierre which is near Mount Pelée.  Mount Pelée erupted in 1902 and killed all the people in St. Pierre except for one prisoner.  The city still has parts of the original buildings that stood at that time.  It was really cool to walk around the city and see all this.  Finding a restaurant that was open seemed to be a bit troublesome, but eventually we did.  In fact I even tried a bite of Abby’s shark.  After lunch we went to a black sand beach which overlooked Mount Pelée.  The sand was so hot to stand on, but the water was the clearest I have ever seen!  We spent about an hour at the beach, before heading back to the hotel.  Because everything was closed, we stayed in the hotel lobby area for about 2 hours before leaving.  Luggage in tow we walked down the streets towards where we had to meet our ferry to take us back to St. Lucia. On the way we stopped at what was like a food truck and I had a crepe and ice cream, 2 things I will not be getting anytime soon in St. Lucia.  We got to the pier and waited forever to go through customs.  Our ferry left about 45 minutes late.  Tanya and I however were smart and actually spent the whole ferry ride back outside.  I did not feel sick at all and I was happy to be back home.

*This will probably be my last blog post until next year.  My t and y keys are currently not working on my laptop so I’ve been using the onscreen keyboard to type those 2 letters which is a pain.

Best coffee I've ever had was in Martinique

Such great travel companions

The canvas actually lights up.  I want this in my future home.

Please don't judge me.

I was able to eat burgers!

22 Changes in Year 22

So I was sitting in church this morning when Abby turns to me and says, “A year ago today, we were sitting in our first church service ever at Trinity.”  What?!  Wow!  A lot has happened in the last year and God has been there with me every step of the way.  I decided after church to make a list of ways in which my life has changed and here is what I came up with.

1.     Abby and I decide that instead of taking a call, we are going to move to St. Lucia, not knowing exactly what that meant in the coming year.

2.     I graduated from college, Kelsey graduated from high school, and Katelyn got married to Ryan.  Three big life changes.  Between July and August we all moved out of the house.

3.     I had my last summer at home with my family (or so I thought).

4.     I had to say goodbye to family and friends who mean so much to me.  Moving far away from them was not easy, but skype, whatsapp, and facebook messenger make it easier to communicate with loved ones far away.

5.     I moved out of the country to a gorgeous island.

6.     I started my first official year of teaching my own class.  I get to spend my days with 29 Reception (Kindergarten) students every day.

7.     I never imagined having a teaching team my first year.  Teacher Najma is awesome and has become a great friend.  Teacher Robin is a great resource person.  So thankful to have the two of them.

8.     These “strangers” that I met last year at church have now become my friends.  I don’t know what I would do without my church family.

9.     I teach piano lessons.  What?!  I’m not even good at piano.  Lesson learned.  You don’t have to be good at piano to teach people what you already know.

10.  I have started learning how to play guitar.  This has always been a dream of mine and it is now becoming a reality.

11.  I live with two awesome roommates.  Abby and Tanya are such a huge part of my life and I don’t think I could live in St. Lucia without them.  (I mean after all Abby does kill the bugs for me.) This however was a big change for me. In college I spent 4 years of my life with one awesome roommate. While Abby and Tanya are not Megan, I do love them and they are great!

12.  I have to make meals for myself every day.  I no longer am walking to the caf to get whatever my heart desires.

13.  Going along with that, I have to buy my own groceries.  Making weekly trips the supermarket is a necessary thing.

14.  No fast food.  I really don’t eat out in St. Lucia very often and when I do it is not fast food.  There are definitely certain foods that I crave that I do not have here in St. Lucia.  Burgers and ice cream are both things I will be filling up on when I get back to the U.S.

15.  I’ve gotten the opportunity to vacation to Barbados and soon will be traveling to Martinique.  Two years ago I never would have imagined that I’d have the opportunity to explore all these different islands, but now I have the opportunity and I’m going to take advantage of it as much as possible.

16.  I now understand a lot more of what Lucians say.  While they speak English, it is not always easy to figure out.  When I first arrived I would literally just stare at people as they spoke and still not understand.  Now I understand most conversations, even when people assume I don’t.

17.  I have started playing piano in church with the band. I never would have thought that I would ever play piano in church.  I don’t play every Sunday, but I feel more comfortable now than I did the first time I started.

18.  I have had to get used to insane heat. I knew that August would be bad, but honestly September, October, and November were all terrible.  I got used to being sweaty all the time and let me tell you this is not a pleasant feeling.  The end of April started getting hot again and I’m assuming I will be sweaty from not until December again.

19.  I don’t have to share a bathroom with 30 girls.  I get my own bathroom and room and I absolutely love it!

20.  I have started yoga.  I’m not one to work out, but after trying a 30 day Yoga with Adrienne series, I can say that I don’t mind yoga and it’s actually a decent workout.  It also helps me relax and sleep better.

21.  Having to get used to unwanted attention from guys because I’m white. When Abby, Tanya, and I are alone, we get kissed at and called out to ALL THE TIME.  We’ve gotten good at ignoring a lot.

22.  No car.  While I don’t really have a desire to drive in St. Lucia, I do miss driving and the freedom that comes with it.  Being able to go wherever I want, whenever I want is something that I do miss.  That being said, I am thankful that we have people who are willing to take us places, as well as a pretty easy bus system that allows us to travel from Castries to Gros Islet without much hassle.

Twenty-two changes in year twenty-two of my life, however God knew what he was doing.  He had better plans for us than we had for ourselves. A year ago I was in a frazzle because I did not know what I wanted to do.  St. Lucia sounded cool, but scary.  Moving away from my family and friends was not easy.  However all of it was worth it and I can’t wait to see what God has in store for me in this coming year.

Last week in April

This week was a bit odd.  Not necessarily because of how school was, but more so because I was in bed and asleep every night by 10, sometimes earlier.  Another thing I’ve been noticing is that the heat is back.  Air conditioning is back on before bed and some days even at school.
Monday was picture day at school.  Other than that it was a normal day.  I came home and had a relaxing night watching a show or two.
Tuesday night we did not have sticky group as Pastor Tom was sick, so instead we again had a relaxing night.  I skyped Deb and AJ and was in bed by 9:45.  So nice!
Wednesday was the strangest day ever.  Teacher Darnelle was sick so I got to spend about an hour and half in grade 1 while Najma taught my class.  I got my stunt in grade 1, but was very happy to return to my classroom after snack.  The rest of the day was off as well since Najma, Robin, and I all had observations to do.  I spent 45 minutes observing the Toddler class and I was very happy when I was finished and able to go back to my classroom for lunch.  The afternoon was a bit off as well since we had a student birthday and a parent coming in to talk to the students about tourism.  I was observed as well and I felt like I was back in student teaching.  By the end of this week observations should be over and I’m extremely grateful to get back normal.  After school I rushed home in time to eat and head to piano.  All my students showed up which was a win in my book and we were able to make it home before 8. Another early bedtime for me.
Thursday was back to normal.  The day went as planned. I’m so proud of my students.  We have been practicing our dance for the dance festival and they are doing fantastic!  I got home and was able to relax a bit before doing a bit of lesson planning.  I finished off the night by skyping Ruth.  Hearing from friends and family makes it easier living far away from home.  Although this is my new home and I am loving it most days!
Friday school was also a bit off as we did not have both music and computer class.  Other than that the day was good.  Abby had a student with a birthday so I got another piece of cake.  With the 3 birthdays that have occurred this last week, I have saved a piece of cake from each.  This is going to be what I eat for my birthday on Monday.  After school we chilled for a bit and then around 5 headed to Spinnakers for happy hour and fries.  On the way home, we stopped at the supermarket to get some groceries.  Casey and Kerne came over about an hour later and we played card games for a couple hours.  I have missed playing games, so it was a fun night.
Saturday morning I was able to sleep in and it felt wonderful!  I woke up, did laundry, made pancakes, watched Bethlehem’s sermon, and watched some of my shows from the week.  It was an overcast day so while we had wanted to go to the beach, we decided to wait.  Instead we walked over to the mall and shopped for 2 hours.  What did I get?  Felly Belly.  That was it.  I can’t justify getting clothes here, I’d much rather wait and shop when I get back home in 2 months.  Before heading home, Abby and I picked up sweet and sour chicken from Jade Terrace.  What a great decision!  I got home and did not have to cook.  We ended the night with movie night.  We pushed the couches together and set up the laptop and speakers on the back of one of the couches.  Such a great set up for us!  We popped some popcorn and enjoyed our movie.  Who needs a movie theater anyways?
This morning we headed to church as usual, but it was a bit of a special Sunday.  A year ago, we were spending our first Sunday ever at Trinity on our visit to St. Lucia.  We realized how special of a congregation it was, as we worshiped with a bunch of strangers.  I remember feeling very overwhelmed because Abby was all for staying and I was all for taking a call.  We had completely switched roles.  Man has God brought us a long way in a year!  Another reason today was different than most Sundays is that Pastor Tom announced that he has returned his call to Colorado.  We were all pretty happy to hear this!  I can’t imagine living in St. Lucia without the Spiegelbergs around.

After church the congregation always sings Happy Birthday to those with birthdays for the week.  As soon as Pastor asked if there were any birthdays, Abby’s hand shot up to announce that it was my birthday.  Everyone was very sweet with the birthday wishes.  I played piano during part of communion and gave Jason a very short piano lesson after Sunday School.  It was a good Sunday.  We returned home to eat our usual Sunday lunch of hash browns.  I skyped Katelyn (and Ryan) for a bit, watched some tv, and took a nap.  Again it is an overcast day.  We had wanted to go to the beach, but we decided we’re saving it for tomorrow.  In a little bit I will be making tacos for dinner.  Tonight we are going with Jen and Tom to Skip Monday (a band).  They are playing at the Marina.  Following that we plan to meet the guys at the beach to ring in my birthday with some waves and a drink.

I love Felly Belly!

Look what my roommates got me for my birthday!

Starting off the birthday weekend right!

Back at it

Well I now see that I have been slacking on the posts.  Whoops! My apologies.  Here is the latest on last week.

Sunday: Church and a lazy day.

Monday: Today I had piano with Q.  Q is one of Pastor Bram friends and he’s pretty enthusiastic about piano.  The first lesson went well.  Afterwards I made dinner and then had a lazy night.

Tuesday: School was a normal day.  After school I made dinner for the girls and then headed to Pastor Brams where I was able to practice guitar. From there Ravi and Sheena picked me up and we went up to Pastor Tom’s where we worked on ordering some more wedding stuff.  I stayed until Sticky group.  This week for Sticky group we had a bit bigger of a group.  Casey and Kerne walked Abby up to Pastor and Jens and then stuck around and Mrs. Kewiche and her husband came as well.  It was nice to have a bigger group.  Afterwards Sheena and Ravi gave us a ride home.  I was really tired so I headed to shower.  Afterwards I was brushing my teeth when all of a sudden I see something move.  I quickly spit out what was in my mouth and called for Abby.  Sure enough, a nice roach was underneath my hairbrush… Thank goodness for Abby! I don’t know what I would do without her.

Wednesday:  After school there was a staff workshop which means we could not have piano lessons this week.  Unfortunately, 3 hours later it seemed as if we hadn’t gotten as far as we should have.   We got home and all I wanted was food.  I quickly ate and then the girls and I ran to the store where I bought some ice cream.  This was the first time I have bought ice cream in the store, but it seemed like it was much needed for the day.

Thursday : Since we weren’t able to have lessons this week at church, Casey came over with the guitar.  He was able to have his piano lesson and I had my guitar lesson.  Afterwards we practiced a few songs for church.  I feel a lot more comfortable playing once I’ve practiced with the guitar.  Later on I skyped Kayla, finished lesson planning (or most of it) and headed to bed.

Friday: Today was a dress down day.  In honor of earth day the children could wear brown or green.  I honestly wish there were no dress down days.  They always seem to bring additional challenges.  Anyways after school was over I came home and started making chocolate chip cookies for CIA and sloppy joes for dinner.  Casey and Kerne came over for dinner, however by the time the cookies were done and we had all eaten, it didn’t make sense to go to CIA.  We would have been extremely late.  Instead all of us including Tanya went to Keebees.  It was a relaxing night and afterwards we made our way home.

Saturday: Saturday morning I woke up early, well early for a Saturday.  Staci picked me up and brought me over to her house to learn how to make mocha roll.  This is a delicious rich chocolaty frozen dessert.  I stayed for just long enough to learn and afterwards Staci dropped me back at home where I watched some TV, skyped Kelsey and Megan, and took a long nap.  Today is Yuri’s birthday so we decided it would be nice to go visit him at work.  While waiting for the guys to arrive Abby and I enjoyed some country music and coloring.  I was so relaxed that I didn’t realize the guys had arrived until they yelled into our window and scared the living daylights out of Abby and I.  I was literally in tears.  We walked to the main road where we caught a bus.  We then spent the night hanging out.

Sunday: This morning I woke up at the crack of dawn.  We got ready and headed to church.  This morning I played 3 songs in church and I was pretty proud of myself.  After church we went with Jen to Mega J’s and Super J’s.  I came back and ate and then took an hour long nap.  It was a much needed nap, but left me tired.  I talked to mom on the phone for a bit and then walked up to Jen and Tom’s for movie night.  It’s been awhile since we’ve gone up on Sunday night.  A well- missed routine.  As soon as we got home, I showed, and crashed.  In fact I was in bed and asleep by 9 P.M.  Monday should be a good day!

Island Hopping: Barbados!

Saturday night:
Pastor Tom came by to pick us up and drop us at the airport.  Our flight for Barbados was supposed to leave at 7:30, but of course LIAT was late.  As we waited, we froze in the airport.  I don’t know why, but it was freezing in there.  By the time our flight actually left, we were supposed to have been in Barbados already. We arrived in Barbados a good hour late, but oh well everything is good!  We made it! We stayed at Oceanspray Beach Apartments and my first impression of the hotel was that it could have been cleaner.  It was not dirty enough to find a new place, but just not as clean as you’d expect a hotel to be.  Oh well! Here is where we are staying for the next 4 nights.  I am really impressed though by the view.  The water is literally right next to the hotel.  You can feel the mist from the waves crashing against the rocks.  The view is spectacular!  I know where we will be spending our nights!

Sunday:
This morning we woke up and headed for breakfast.  The hotel serves a continental breakfast in the morning.  The food was pretty good, but my favorite part was the juice and the view!  If only I could wake up to this view every morning!  The waves are rolling in and hitting the rocks.  A perfect morning to enjoy God’s creation!
After breakfast we went to the front desk where the helpful lady showed us a map and explained how to take the bus as well as where to get it.  We headed back to the room to finish getting ready and then headed out for the day.
Today we left thinking we were going to go spend the day a place called the Boatyard.  We left the hotel and headed in the direction of the nearest bus.  Because we take bus in St. Lucia, we knew it was cheaper and were told we should be fine as long as ask where we are going.  Well we got to where we thought the bus would pick us up and waited.   Not before too long did a guy come and let us know that we needed to hop the bus a short walk away.  No problem.  We got on the bus and were surprised at how easy it was to ride.  A bus ride is 1 U.S. or 2 Barbadian.  So cheap compared to a taxi and so worth it!  We headed to Boatyard and realized that it was very similar to Reduit (our beach in St. Lucia) and decided to leave.  We then walked towards Bridgetown and found the bus station to take a bus to Crane Beach.  For 2 U.S. we traveled on a big blue bus for about 30 minutes to Crane beach and it was gorgeous!  So worth the time it took to get there.  The view was breathtaking!  We walked along the rocks, laid out for a bit, ate some food at the beach restaurant and then headed back to wait for the bus. Our timing was incredible.  We were thinking we’d have to wait for about 30 minutes before our bus would show up, but after about 10 minutes of waiting the blue bus came rolling around the corner and we quick ran across the street to get on.  We got off at Oistens (closer to our hotel) and went to the ATM and gas station to get some food and juice.  We walked across the street to another beach and sat down to enjoy a shandy before heading back home.  On the way home we stopped at Chefette for dinner.  This is basically Barbados’ version of McDonalds, but in my opinion 10x better than McDonalds!  My broasted chicken sandwich was amazing and I got a second in case we don’t get food tomorrow after our day tour.  We caught bus 11 to get back to our hotel and the guy on the bus again helped us to find our stop.  Taking bus is pretty easy here and I’m glad we’ve decided to use this as our means of transportation. After arriving at the hotel we took it easy and then enjoyed some drinks under the stars at our hotel.
I’m very proud of us.  With many questions we were able to get around all day, no problem!  First impression of Barbados has been good.  The people are extremely helpful and friendly and the sand is the softest sand I’ve ever felt!  More to come tomorrow!

Monday:
This morning Abby and I got up at 5:45 for the sunrise.  While it wasn’t the best sunrise I’ve ever seen, it was pretty spectacular watching it come up over the ocean (something we don’t get to do in St. Lucia).  Because we were up so early and had to leave early for our day tour, I did not fall back asleep after that.  Instead I drank some coffee, watched a show, and went to breakfast with the girls.  We got picked up at 7:45 in the morning and left for Harrison’s cave.  Our driver that was taking us around for the day had a little bit too much energy for so early in the morning and therefore some of the things he said sounded crazy.  However as the day wore on he was filled with facts and we learned a lot about Barbados and its history.
Our first stop was the Harrison’s cave and it was really cool.  The cave is pretty big and the whole tour was done by tram.  Seeing the stalactites, stalagmites, pillars, pools, ect. was really cool and amazed me.  Again I could see the power of God in his creation.  After the cave tour we drove nearby to a Wildlife reserve where we watched green monkeys being fed.  The monkeys were not caged and roam freely throughout the area, however the only time we saw any was during feeding time.  The swarm of monkeys following the bananas was insane!  We started to walk down the path to see if we could see any more wildlife, but about halfway through it started to rain in the forest.  I was very glad that I brought my rain jacket as it helped keep me dry.  We then turned around and headed back to the lookout point until we headed back onto the bus.
Next we drove a bit until we reached Bathsheba.  Bathsheba is a rock formation on the coast.  It was beautiful!  While a short stop, it was one of my favorites to see.  After about 10 minutes we left and had about an hour drive south where we went to a place called Pirates Cove for lunch.  Our Bajan lunch was delicious!  Barbeque chicken, macaroni pie, rice, stewed meat, corn, salad, plantains, and cooked vegetables all were on my plate and I can say all were gone by the end of the meal.
Following lunch we boarded a pontoon which took us to the turtles.  This was by far my favorite part of the trip!  The turtles were AMAZING!  Some literally came within inches of me.  We spent a good 30 minutes swimming with the turtles as the captains of the boat threw food into the water to keep them near us.  I can’t even begin to describe to you how cool this experience was. It is just something you will have to experience yourself some day!  The turtles were so cool we tried taking underwater pictures with Tanya’s underwater camera.  Unfortunately the camera didn’t last long though and took on water.  Downside the camera might be toast, positive side is that she was able to capture about 5 pictures before it died. Our friendly driver actually went to the local store and bought Tanya some rice for her camera to sit in.  After the turtles, we headed back to Pirates cove where we were given chairs to relax on for the last hour of our day.  With our free drink in hand, we enjoyed our chairs and the view.
After the tour our driver dropped us at Buffy’s, a small local store close to our hotel.  We wanted to get juice for the night.  We then walked the rest of the rest of the way to the hotel where we chilled for a bit before we went out and walked down around a path on the coast. Watching the waves and how they form and build off of each other is really cool.  The power in just one wave incredible.  Anyways we headed back before it got dark and the tide came in.  After a long packed day we were all pretty tired.  We relaxed for a bit and showered.  I bought an extra Chefette sandwich the day before, so I ate that for dinner.  We finished off the night with a drink under the stars and went to bed.

Tuesday:

We started off this morning chilling in the room and having breakfast.  Around 10 we left for the bus and headed towards Rockley Beach.  It was very relaxing.  All the different shades of blue that you see in the water still amazes me! So beautiful!
We spent maybe an hour or so on the beach.  I went in the water and felt like I was in a wave pool, except for there was obviously real waves and salt water.  It didn’t take long before I was tired and came back to dry off on my towel.  Around 12 we headed for lunch.  Across the way we found some food and shops.  I ate pizza before heading to shop for some souvenirs.  We then took the bus back to the hotel.  I am really amazed at how smooth this bus system is.  In St. Lucia we just have the bus driver, but in Barbados many buses have the driver plus a person in the back who takes the money.  It really seems to keep things moving.  It’s also really nice for us as we don’t know where we are going so we tell them exactly where we want to go and they take care of it.
We didn’t have long at the hotel before we were picked up for our sunset boat cruise.  We had a lovely time aboard El Tigre where we stopped twice to snorkel and then headed out to watch the sunset.  Swimming with turtles is definitely the highlight of this trip!  While aboard we were served a bunch of delicious finger foods and we were able to try the local rum and beer.  I would say both of fairly similar to St. Lucias.  While I loved the sunset cruise, I was a bit bummed.  My favorite sarong blew off the boat and is now most likely on the bottom of the Atlantic Ocean.  I hope they have another that I can buy when I get home.
Following the cruise, we had our driver drop us at Oistens.  This is an area that is known for its food and entertainment on the weekends.  I’m not quite sure what we were thinking but each of us got food plate of food.  I have never seen so much food in my life- well maybe that’s just my eyes saying this because I had already eaten on the boat.  Anyways we got some local food, but none of us were able to finish it.  I guess we’re going to have leftovers for tomorrow!  We took the bus back home and enjoyed a drink under the stars before heading to bed for the night.

Wednesday:

I can’t believe our last day in Barbados is over.  It has been a great vacation!  This morning we all got up not feeling the greatest.  I’m not sure what happened exactly, but we’re thinking it may have to do with something we ate last night.  So much for leftovers today, I do not think I will be eating them! None of us slept well and all of us had this uneasy feeling in our stomachs.  Despite all of that we got up, packed up our bags, and headed for breakfast.  We then went back to the room to grab our things.  We left our luggage in the office at the hotel, as we would not be back for checkout time, and met our surf instructor who came to pick us up.  Yep that’s right.  I am going to try to surf!
Upon arrival at Barry’s Surf School, we paid and then headed to the beach for our lesson. Barry, Simon, and Ben were our surf instructors.  Because there was only 5 in the group, we had lots of individual help.  Surprisingly our lesson on land was about 5 minutes long and before we knew it we were hitting the waves.  “Knee, foot, up,” were our simple direction on how to stand on a surfboard.  My first wave came and I repeated to myself “knee, foot, up.” All of a sudden I was standing.  What?!  I rode my first wave in all the way to shore! So exciting!  Paddling out was way harder than I expected and therefore a huge workout.  It was really cool though and I would recommend to anyone who has ever thought about surfing to give it a try.  Your eyes may burn from the salt water and your legs might get fried after 2 hours of being in the sun, but its worth it!  Yes I will admit I did get a bit sunburned.  I lost track of time and about 45 minutes before our time was up, I went to reapply, but by then it was too late.  Oh well!  I’m glad its our last day and I won’t have to deal with a burn and wanting to be at the beach tomorrow.

After surfing, we stayed at the beach for a bit longer and relaxed on some chairs.  We then went off to find food, but instead of going to a restaurant we popped into the local supermarket.  Boy was this such a good decision!  Bajan’s have donuts and not just any donut, sprinkled donuts!  I of course had to buy one and I got Hershey’s cookies and cream milk to go along with it, all of which was reasonably priced for an island.  Could I not have chosen more Bajan food?  Yes, but in the moment the American food was what I wanted and I could not have been happier.  We then went back to the surf school where Barry drove us back to the hotel.  We enjoyed our food there.  I can’t believe our time is coming to a close.  We spent our last hour and half sitting in chairs and watching the waves roll in.  Tanya and I were able to take quick showers in the extra bathroom before our taxi showed up to take us to the airport.  Once we arrived at the airport, I got Chefette one more time before heading through security.  I really am going to miss Barbados!  Teacher Liz was at the airport and on the same flight back with us.  We all almost missed our flight back to St. Lucia because we were in the wrong spot, but made it for the last boarding call.  Back in St. Lucia, Jen picked us up and we headed home to relax a bit before bed.  It does feel good to be home, but I really do miss Barbados!

Holy Week

This last week was a special week for the children.  On Monday our school day started as usual with assembly.  After assembly we headed back to the classroom to stuff our paper mache eggs with Easter candy.  The children brought in lots of candy so this took a bit of time to get them stuffed.  Afterwards we headed outside with snacks, lunch, picnic baskets, and balls.  The children spent the rest of the day playing on the big field with grade 1.  During the afternoon we hid the eggs on the lower schools play field and the children had to go search for their egg.  We then finished the day off on the field where parents picked their children up.  It was a relaxing day and fun to interact with the children in a different way than normal.  After the picnic, we had conferences to do.  I was at school until about 5:15 and came home exhausted, only to remember that we were heading to Pastor Tom’s to sing for his birthday.  We went to Pastor Tom’s around 8 and were back around 10, where I crashed for the night.
Tuesday was another special day.  Pajama and movie day!  All the students came to school looking very comfy.  They brought blankets, pillows, and popcorn for the movie.  We teachers worked on darkening the room, by putting blankets or newspaper in front of the windows.  Since grade 1 was joining us, opened the partitions between 3 classrooms and put on the Air Conditioning for the day.  We watched Kung Fu Panda 2 and Rio.  Both movies were good, however often hard to hear as our speakers were not super loud and we had students from both classes talking.  Too bad I didn’t have our neighbor’s speakers from upstairs.  If we had everyone would have been able to hear.  Oh well! Next time! Again after movie day was conferences.  Another long day at school.
Wednesday was our last day with children at school for Term 2.  It started off with the school marathon.  Not all of our students were involved, however, since most were all Najma, Robin, and I all went on the walk/run around the neighborhood.  While not long, the hill that we walked up was a bit hard for some of the students.  I am very proud of my Kindergarteners for not giving up and finishing it though!  After the marathon, the rest of the day was really relaxed.  Because of the marathon I was short 6 children, so we spent the rest of the day with sports awards and lots of outdoor time.  Once my students left, we again had conferences.  Not all the parents showed up though, so I spent a lot of time standing around.  That is when it hit me how tired I was.  I really need to catch up on sleep!  Once I came home, I quick finished making spaghetti which is what we brought over to Pastor and Jen’s for dinner.  Our sticky group was providing dinner for Kettle Morraine Lutheran High School (KML) who is visiting for the week and helping with Vacation Bible School.  After dinner Abby and I stuck around to do dishes.  We don’t find it fair for Tom and Jen to have to do all of them when they host.  After dishes Abby headed home and I stayed to help Ravi and Sheena with some wedding stuff.  It ended up being a really late night, but oh well! I was more than happy to help!
Thursday was a day full of conferences.  Our morning started off slow, but we were able to get through majority of our parents before 1.  We finished up for the day at that time, as Robin had to get to a funeral.  I came home from and took a much needed nap.  That night we went to church for their Maundy Thursday service.  I came home and crashed for the night.
Friday I was actually able to sleep in!  It was so nice and again much needed.  I had a relaxing morning and was able to watch some shows and do bible study.  We headed to church for Good Friday service.  Good Friday was a Tenebrae service. At the end of the service we wrote on a piece of paper our sins and then we nailed them to the cross, like actually nailed it to the cross.  It was a very personal way for me to realize that I am also responsible for Jesus’ death, yet he died for me to take away my sins.  After church we went to the beach with Tanya.  We were going to go to Reduit beach, however as we were walking past the Aquatic Centre a parent asked if we’d like a ride Landings beach.  Even though this was not our plan, we couldn’t pass up a ride so we went.  We walked from Landings to Pigeon where we sat on the rocks and watched the waves on the Atlantic Ocean.  As we sat there we realized we had no idea how we were going to get home.  It is Good Friday and therefore a holiday in St. Lucia.  We weren’t even sure the busses would be running for the day and we didn’t have too much longer before dark.  Well God was looking out for us.  Not too long after this we looked over and down the way was Pastor Bram and Q.  Kerne, Casey, and Bradley had also come with and were chilling by the car.  While Bram did not have room for us, he did mention that KML was at Pigeon and Pastor Tom would be picking them up in the church bus.  So we waited for the church bus, got our beach fix, and were able to relax a bit. The day turned out perfect with free transportation and the beach!  Friday night our neighbors came over to hang out for a bit.  By the time they left it was pretty late and we quickly tidied up.  Tanya went to grab the laundry from the laundry room, however there was a HUGE spider in there.  This one was even bigger than before.  After a few screams we quickly messaged the guys upstairs and being the manly men they are, they came to take care of it.  All 3 of them.  So there is a benefit to having male neighbors and we are definitely happy to not have to take care of the huge spiders! Unfortunately they lost the spider trying to kill it.  They searched everywhere and couldn’t find it.  We’re hoping that it ran into their laundry room and died, but because we know it was not killed we are still uneasy about going into the laundry room.
Saturday morning came way too quick.  We woke up early to get to church clean up.  I worked outside a bit picking weeds and picking up garbage and then inside as well.  I lucked out and did not have to go outside as it rained because I was wearing a white shirt.  After church clean-up, the band practiced for the Easter service.  Easter will be the first service that I will play with the band for in church.  A big day for me!  Upon arrival at home I took a 10 minute nap and then changed for the beach.  Along the way we stopped at the bank, Lime, and felly belly.  I was a big crabby until I got my felly belly in me.  As we arrived at the beach we ran into the KML students again.  We relaxed a bit and after a short while our neighbors met us there.  They are very unique fellas and because they are med school students, they know a different group of people that we do.  We met another med school student and all watched the sunset before heading home. On our way home we got groceries and after a quick dinner, I started making cookies for Easter Sunday snacks after church.  It was another late night and I was exhausted around 11 when I finally got around to going to bed.
Happy Easter!  Tanya came with us to church this morning.  It was so fun to be in church on Sunday and see what Easter in St. Lucia is like.  Church was packed!  I loved the flowers and the music and everything.  I had my official debut in the church band, which I think went okay.  I’m hoping now I’ll feel more confident to play in church.  I also sang in the choir and that was pretty sweet too.  Theresa, one of my Sunday school students, sat with me for majority of the service. I love that I can be an example for her, not just in Sunday school but during church as well.  After church we stayed to help with VBS prep.  While I don’t mind helping, I will say that it was something we probably could have skipped after presenting our music to the group.  I wasn’t in the best mood that afternoon and we stayed until about 3:30.  I was hungry and tired and just wanted to spend a bit of time at home before Easter dinner at Jens.  Fortunately Ian took the bus home with Abby and I and we were able to make the potatoes and change before heading up for Easter dinner.
Easter dinner was delicious!  It was the first time I have had ham since being here and I loved it.  We also had potatoes of all kinds and corn.  After eating, we played adults verses young adults in playdough Pictionary.  Yes I was finally considered an adult! J It was fun playing with the group that was there.  After everyone left, Tanya, Abby and I stuck around to help with dishes.  I think this may become a trend of ours.  By the time I got home however I was crabby! I think I’m realizing that my break is not actually going to be a break.  I will not be able to sleep in.  I will not be able to do what I want.  I will not be able to relax as much as I’d hoped and I will not be going to bed early.  Hoping tomorrow I wake up in a better mood.  Tonight however I am just going to crash.
